CONCEPT
People have their own world that only you can see, and the world as seen by others.
That’s OUTER WORLD and INNER WORLD.
We all have LIGHT and SHADOW. There is a loneliness behind the smile. The stronger the light is, the darker the shadow.
I started to put on a mask when I thought I have to be strong when I'm in the outside world. At the same time, I was struggling to face a gap between my inside world and outside world and I sometimes lost the real me. Then, to find myself, I decided to make a new edition with a theme of PERSONA. When I just started working on it, an event that changed the world happened.
Tokyo Olympics was planned for 2020. It would be the best opportunity for Tokyo to become more global, but the COVID-19 pandemic happened all over the world and took people's hope and made them suffer. In these fragile times, some people mentally break down, some loose their dreams and some loose their hope and end their own lives. When we get something, we loose something, there is a proportional relationship value between positivity and negativity. Therefore, we can think of this difficult time as a trial given by God to face ourselves and make us realise how important normal life is.
This editions theme is PERSONA and it will tell you about the relationship between light and shadow inside humans or events in the world through our photos and interviews with various artists from the world. The first thing I came up with for this theme was “Idols” who are always smiling to people and also “actors” who act like someone else. I asked them “which face is real for you”. They talked to me emotionally, sometimes with a catch in the throat or tears in their eyes. They are individual humans as well as entertainers on the TV. The nature of this edition is what is “personality”? Like the Moon needs the Sun to let it shine, after reading this I hope you can find someone or somewhere where you can be yourself.
人には自分にしか見えないあなたの世界と他者から見たあなたの世界がある。
それが外側と内側の世界。
誰もが持つ光と影。笑顔の奥にある孤独。光が強ければ強いほど、影が濃くなる。
外側にいる時、自分は強くいなくてはいけない、そう思った時に仮面をつけるようになった。同時に内側にいる時とのギャップに耐えられなくなり、本当の自分を見失いはじめた。
その時、自分自身を見つけるために出会ったテーマがPERSONA(ペルソナ)だった。
だが、作品を作り始めた時、世の中を変える出来事が起きた。
2020年は東京オリンピック開催の年。東京が世界で一番グローバルになる良い機会だったが、新型コロナウイルスが世界中に蔓延したため期待と希望から一転、人々が苦しむ年となった。心が安定しない時代に自分を追い込んでしまう人、希望を失った人、時には行き場を無くして命を絶つ人もいる。何かを得れば何かを失う、ポジティブとネガティブの比例した関係値を考えると困難な状況は自分と向き合うため、当たり前だと思い込んでいた日常への感謝に気づくために神様が与えた試練だと捉えることもできる。
今回のテーマであるペルソナは人々の二面性や世の中で起きることの陰と陽の関係性を世界中のアーティストとの撮影やインタビューを通して伝える作品となる。このテーマで1番初め思い浮かんだ存在が大衆の前で明るい笑顔を見せる「アイドル」と偽りの自分を演じる「俳優」だった。彼らに「どの顔が本当のあなた」なのか問いかけた。時に言葉をつまらせたり、涙を浮かべながら感情的に話す姿もあった。彼らはテレビに映る芸能人であるまえに一人の人間である。この作品で伝えたい本質は「自分らしさ」とは何か。月は輝くために太陽が必要なように、この作品を読んだあと、あなたがあなたらしくいられる人や居場所を見つけてほしい。

東京版表紙はジャニーズから新世代アーティストグループSixTONESの京本大我。前号のジェシーに続きSixTONESから単独カバーでの起用となる。さらにバックカバーには現在、編集長が最も注目する女優、南沙良。BOURGEOIS 5TH ISSUEに登場して以来、2年ぶりのCOME BACKとなる。そして、ソウル版ではBOURGEOIS初のKPOPボーイズグループとなるAB6IXを大特集。メンバーのマンネ（最年少）であるデフィは単独表紙に起用。さらにグループではバックカバーを飾る。また、昨年に実施した読者アンケートからBOURGEOIS編集長がピックアップアーティストに川島如恵留(Travis Japan)を抜擢。
今回の豪華なラインナップは表紙だけではない。東京、ソウル、ロンドンを中心に大活躍するアーティストたちが編集長の呼びかけにより、コロナ渦の中、BOURGEOISに大集結。アイドル、女優、ミュージシャンがそれぞれの二面性をこの作品では語り、読んだ後に人に優しくなりたいと思える作品をBOURGEOISが世界に届ける。
